Royal Caribbean has always pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in cruising. In recent years, Royal Caribbean has taken this challenge to new heights with the introduction of two of their most ambitious ships: Utopia of the Seas and Icon of the Seas. Both vessels represent the pinnacle of modern cruise ship design, offering so many experiences which are more like a floating city. But how do they compare?
1. Design and Size
Icon of the Seas is the first in Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class. This ship is designed to be a hybrid, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), making it one of the most environmentally friendly ships in the fleet. Icon of the Seas is not only massive but also packed with technological innovations aimed at sustainability and guest experience. This ship is doing 7-night cruises to the Caribbean and Perfect Day at Coco Cay.
On the other hand, Utopia of the Seas is part of the Oasis Class, which has been the hallmark of Royal Caribbean's fleet for over a decade. Utopia is slightly smaller compared to Icon, but it compensates with its sprawling layout and diverse entertainment zones that have been fine-tuned over the years. This ship is doing 3- and 4-night cruises to the Bahamas and Perfect Day at Coco Cay.
2. Accommodation
When it comes to staterooms and suites, Icon of the Seas sets a new standard with a wide range of accommodations tailored to different types of travelers. From family-friendly suites with separate rooms for children to luxurious two-story lofts, Icon is designed to cater to both large families and luxury seekers. The introduction of Infinite Verandas, which convert balcony space into additional living area, is a standout feature on this ship. We really loved the Family Infinite Oceanview Balcony with a separate bunk bed area and extra bath.
Utopia of the Seas continues the Oasis Class tradition of offering a variety of staterooms, from budget-friendly interior rooms to expansive suites in the exclusive Suite Neighborhood. Utopia's accommodations are designed with the seasoned cruiser in mind, offering comfort and familiarity with enhanced amenities, but without the groundbreaking concepts found on Icon.
3. Entertainment and Activities
In terms of entertainment, Icon of the Seas is designed to wow. The ship features the AquaDome, a massive, climate-controlled space at the top of the ship that houses high-diving performances, immersive shows, and panoramic ocean views. The Surfside neighborhood, tailored specifically for young families, and the Thrill Island waterpark, featuring the tallest water slide at sea, are among the ship's headline attractions. The Main Theater Show is The Wizard of Oz and should not be missed! Better than a Broadway show and by far better than any show on any cruise line at this time.
Utopia of the Seas offers the familiar neighborhoods like Central Park, Boardwalk, and the Royal Promenade, each with its unique vibe and attractions. Having this familiarity is important when you are doing a short cruise on a very large ship. The Ultimate Abyss and the FlowRider surf simulator are just a couple of the thrills that await guests on Utopia. Looking for a tiki bar? Make sure to check out the Pesky Parrot. The ship also features Broadway-caliber shows, ice-skating performances, and a host of other entertainment options that ensure there's never a dull moment!
4. Dining and Culinary Experiences
Both ships offer a diverse array of dining options, but Icon of the Seas pushes the boundaries with more than 20 distinct culinary venues. From casual eateries to fine dining, Icon introduces new concepts like the Mediterranean-inspired AquaDome Market and the family-focused Surfside Eatery. The ship's dining options are designed to help you grab a bite while you are enjoying the ship. If you are onboard, make sure to try the Market’s fresh crepes! Or stop by Playmakers, the largest at sea, with lots to keep sports fans happy.
Utopia of the Seas has your Oasis class typical dining venues, including the ever-popular Central Park’s fine dining options and the Boardwalk’s casual eateries. Onboard Giovanni’s has moved to where Wonderland was on previous Oasis class ships (a nice change in our opinion). Guests now have great views of the Boardwalk and the addition of patio seating available! The ship also debuts the first Railroad immersive dining experience at sea. At this time the experience is a Wild West themed dinner theater ride with a plan for other themes including romantic dinner, murder mystery and a Polar Express later down the line.
Conclusion
Both Utopia of the Seas and Icon of the Seas represent the best of what Royal Caribbean has to offer, but they cater to slightly different audiences. Icon of the Seas is for those looking to experience the latest and greatest in cruise ship innovation, with a focus on sustainability, family-friendly amenities, and cutting-edge technology. This ship is perfect for families both big and small, multi-generational trips and groups wanting to travel together.
Utopia of the Seas, meanwhile, is perfect for cruisers who love the Oasis Class experience but want something fresh and slightly refined. It offers the familiarity of Royal Caribbean’s most beloved features, with just enough newness to keep things exciting. This ship is perfect for those with limited days off, bachelor/bachelorette trips, young adults, and older adults as this is the “Weekend Getaway” theme ship. There are quiet areas on board but from the moment you arrive in the port to check in to the time you leave, you will see and hear a party. You may find the 4-night cruise, during the week, has a calmer vibe since it is not sailing over the weekend, but time will tell.
Ultimately, the choice between these two ships will depend on what kind of cruise experience you’re looking for. Whether you’re drawn to the groundbreaking innovations of Icon of the Seas or the perfected luxury of Utopia of the Seas, both ships promise an unforgettable journey on the open sea.
